Community Projects

We have a number of community projects that the West Oakland Chapter has decided to run concurrently as on-going projects. We are very supportive of sewing for community service and thank our generous members for their time and effort in giving back to those in need in our communities.

Pillowcases for the Hawthorne Center between 6 and 7 Mile Roads on Haggarty. The Hawthorne Center services troubled children between 4 and 17. They would like to use these pillowcases as part of a "birthday present" for their residents and need at least 12 a month, so this will be a continuing project. The Chapter Board has voted to furnish kits for pillowcases for teen boys of appropriate fabric. If you would like to participate in this project using one of these kits, please contact your Neighborhood Group Leader. Completed pillowcases to be turned into your Neighborhood Group Leader or Susan Cline.

While any pillowcase to fit a standard pillow is welcome, we are providing directions for easy to make pillowcases for your convenience.

PILLOWCASE DIRECTIONS: (Hot Dog method) Materials -

  • 27" by length of material (44-45") for each pillowcase
  • 12" by length of material (44-45") for header of pillowcase
  • Piping (optional) 45"
  • Washable materials a must!

Step 1: With right sides together sew one long edge of header to length of pillowcase. If piping is desired, insert it between the two pieces.
Step 2: Spread pillowcase out flat and roll top of pillowcase lightly towards the bottom of the header. This forms the hot dog.
Step 3: Wrap the header around the "hot dog" to form the "bun", matching the cut edge to the previously sewn edge, right sides together. (The Wrong side of the header will be on the outside.) Re-sew the seam through all layers being careful not to catch the pillowcase ("hot dog") in this seam.
Step 4: Carefully pull the pillowcase "hot dog" our of the header "bun" from one end. You will end up with all of the seams on the inside of the header.
Step 5: Fold pillowcase in half with right sides together and raw edges even. Sew the side seam and bottom of the pillowcase. Turn right side out!
